I've been missed

My dad said today that he actually missed me. And that he's glad I'm home. And that he's proud of me. This is very strange, this development. I wonder how long it will last.

(Yes, I know I am a cynic).

I am done with my freshman year of college. It's surreal in a way -- an accomplishment that I didn't appreciate until today. I was taking a car to JFK airport to fly home (and no, I'm not rich, but it's easier and cheaper than a cab... not to mention more reliable driving!) this afternoon and as I was riding over the bridges and overpasses and looking over the Manhattan skyline, I thought to myself "I did it. I decided I was going to do something and I did it. I am living my dreams here -- I live in New York City, I have good grades at college, and I did all of it on my own, really. And I moved out here without knowing anyone, no friends, no family to speak of, and I have built a life for myself here where I have friends and I have a family of sorts... and New York has become home to me." And those thoughts are some of the most wonderful and empowering feelings in the world.

Also: It is nice to reconnect with old friends and find out that you are as special to them as they are to you. :-)

I'm sure you've mentioned it somewhere in your journal but I don't remember--where do you go to school? I'm considering coming to New York for grad school (Fall 2003)....either acting or playwriting, I still can't decide.

I go to NYU. :-) If you go there, go to Tisch for acting -- it's a better program than their dramatic writing program that focuses more on screenwriting and making money than playwriting as an art. For playwriting, go to Columbia. That's where my professor in that subject last semester went (for grad school, I think. He did go to Julliard for a while but then he got kicked out or something).
