Flying Finns and and things

The world is full of crazy people.

In a break from thesis-writing, I watched "Stunt Junkies" on the discovery channel to watch a crazy Finn with miniature jet engines strapped to his feet soar accross the sky and a wakeboarder jump a 60 foot fountain.

I wonder, at times, what is it about people wanting to fly? This idea of flight has captivated us for ages, pervading mythology ... I wonder if it comes from a desire to be master of everything, to feel free of predators, and to see the world uninterrupted and free from daily distractions.

That and the rush of wind over our skin and bodies, but that feeling can be had in so many ways.

I think it comes from looking at birds as a kid, and thinking "I want what they have". If you're a child it's an obvious thing to covet. I wonder it would be the same with swimming, if we couldn't do it, or if the water weren't so cold and didn't get up our noses.
