We (my uncle, cousin, cousin's girlfriend and I) drove across the Arrowhead today to Silver Bay and then down to Split Rock State Park for a day hike along the Split Rock River. The 5-mile loop (chosen b/c of a number of leg injuries in our group) meandered along the edge of the river, sometimes level with it, sometimes above, sometimes steep and sometimes flat. We hiked over grassy bits and earthen bits surrounded by birch and poplar trees, and stairs of rock packed in dirt with the occasional stretch of trail paved in loose rock, and all along the scenery was beautiful -- trees and rapids and walls of red rock and the occasional view of the shimmering blue expanse of Lake Superior.

The Split Rock River Loop (where we hiked) is a section of the Superior Hiking Trail, a 205-mile trail along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Two Harbors to Grand Portage at the Minnesota-Ontario border. There were a few campsites along the way and at one end of the trail was a trail register for people to write comments about their adventures. One couple who signed was celebrating 39 years of marriage, which was pretty amazing, I thought. I hope that I can still hike when/if I've been married that long. And that I have someone to do it with.

It was a wonderful afternoon. It left me daydreaming about hiking the entirety of the Superior Trail, and figuring that I could theoretically do this next summer (probably south from Grand Portage, and then asking family to come collect me from Two Harbors, after which I'd spend a week or so playing at the lake). Might be a fun adventure.

I love the North Shore...and I've always wanted to do the whole Superior Hiking Trail. Do it! And if I'm home, maybe I'll even join you for part of it. :)
