Reflections on my writing

At the beginning of the semester, I wrote well. I wrote real prose and captured emotions and wrote things that actually seemed like journal entries that could have been written by a writer. Lately, even my longer entries have been lacking some of that quality of capturing a moment -- freezing time and immortalizing it with words, and it is disheartening.

As I was writing my 8 page paper for Modern British Drama yesterday, or more correctly as I was thinking about what I was going to write on my way to an intervening class, I came to the conclusion that my persona as a writer is that of a playwright. When writing, I don't think of how words look, or how things read, but of how the would sound if read aloud. I would normally classify this as a form of public speaking, but public speaking implies more pontification and reflection than I really do in most of my writing. It doesn't seem like it would be drama, either, but if we classify David Hare's Via Dolorosa, a one-person play describing his own experiences visiting Israel and Palestine, as drama, then my writing would also qualify. The story is told through tales of experience, linked together by the fact that all of the experiences shared one man, the author, telling the story and relating the other points of view. The reflection, the author's opinion rose from the way in which characters and vignettes and moments were woven together to create one cohesive fabric.

Journals, I suppose, are different from drama. A Journal, to me, is a place to record specific reflections, not necessarily for the purposes of others reading them, yet the online format means that I certainly write, at least to some extent, for an audience, especially noting that my sense of responsibility to an audience is often the cause of my writing.

I wonder what it would be like if I kept a personal journal that no read, save myself.

On a completely unrelated note, I really hope there is no transit strike. That would make my life fitfully inconvenient.
